Saudade is an untranslatable Portuguese word that means more than missing something, it’s longing for it. Saudade is when you love so intensely that you become a part of it, even when it’s far away from you. It represents the feeling that you have when leaving your home, for example. This is very familiar to international students.
The magazine Translating Saudade is my attempt to translate this feeling. I will do that through the memories of Latin American Students living in Europe. I want them to feel at home reading these personal stories. Also, I want people from other places to learn more about our culture by the words of natives.
As an international journalism student, I’m doing human interest interviews with these Latinos and writing articles in first person. This way, the audience can connect with them and truly understand their tone of voice. As if it’s a personal conversation with the reader, it’s possible to dive deep into their stories and feel the intrinsic details of their culture on them.
So, come with me to enjoy this virtual trip to Latin America! I hope you can bring cultural knowledge or nostalgia as a souvenir.
